nicgary-foodfestival

Originally when we’d planned on our trip in October it had been to see the park done up for Halloween. But when we learned that it also happened to coincide with Epcot’s 17th annual Food & Wine Festival (being held until November 12th) we knew we had to go. Unfortunately even trying to book things over a month out from our reservation proved fruitless as the festival has proven to be hugely popular with amateur and professional foodies alike since it was first started in 1995. The festival we learned …

zombies

World War Z proved a fresh perspective on the zombie apocalypse genre by focusing on the aftermath of the war instead of following it through the outbreak. Treating it much like a pandemic, Brooks does a brilliant job creating a realistic progression of its spread and the affect it has around the world. Written more like a series of documentary interviews about the war, the stories and accounts of the survivors paints a harrowing first person account of the struggles mankind faced as it was brought to the brink of …

Carnival chirigota

Despite potentially being one of the longest continually populated cities in all of Europe, Cadiz within the last decade has faced a steady decline in population with some neighborhoods seeing decreases of almost ten percent. Ironically the same peculiar geography that made it such an important hub to sea commerce over the centuries, is now playing a role in this loss thanks to the pronounced shortage of land required to develop housing for a larger population. All of which is compounded by the fact that the sandspit the city is …

For whatever reason the more popular a series becomes the less editing seems to occur. This often means the length of the books increase by hundreds of pages, and that the number of grammatical errors which slip through become much more apparent. While my present investment in the story meant I was prepared to plod through over nine hundred and fifty pages, I was however surprised – and even a little disappointed – that some characters only ended up with only one or two chapters, while others yet have been …

dave_chappelle

Thanks to Nic’s internet-fu we heard about Dave Chappelle’s three pop-up shows being staged at the Winter Garden Theatre this week, and were able to snag some tickets before it quickly sold out. Given that it’d been almost six years since the reclusive stand-up comedian had performed in Toronto after quitting his cable show, really not all that surprising. Accompanied by DJ Future the Prince (Drake’s official deejay) the crowd was entertained with his beats as the theatre filed in for the performance, before the opening comic Gilson Lubin came …

curiosity

Over the long weekend here in Ontario, Nic and I were fortunate enough to have the chance to attend the Canadian Space Agency’s tweetup at their headquarters in St. Hubert for Curiosity’s landing on Mars this past Sunday (August 5th).
We also got to return later that morning and get a tour of the facilitates and hear from a number of lecturers on the work they’re doing there and the CSA’s plans for the future. While we’re still working on processing the footage we have of their Rover testbed and …

When I went to #NASATweetup for the final Shuttle launch, I was also featured on The National – and because of that, my family and I were fortunate enough to have a short reel of Super 8 film transferred to digital.  The clip was also used on the broadcast.  It’s pretty amazing to see the difference in technology in the twenty-nine years between the two launches… even if my footage is really really bad.  The fact that I shot it on my PHONE is astounding alone.
Here’s what my dad shot …

Recently I wrote about how the UNESCO’s World Heritage program is intended to protect those sites singled out as cultural and natural treasures. Having come across this recent report Aljazeera did on the program and the impact it’s having on some of the very sites it’s meant to protect. I thought I should share, and let you weigh in on whether it is in fact doing more harm than good.

gary-throne

For those who might be going through some Game of Thrones withdrawal, and hasn’t already seen this, thanks to Geek and Sundry for bringing us this great music video plea to our favorite writer turned HBO sensation.
Also, I should really get around to reading A Dance with Dragons. Nic’s already read it once, and was immediately considering reading it a second time. Plus she’s been awesome about not spoiling it for me.

Gaming

Probably one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned trying to continue gaming while pursuing my career and becoming a homeowner is that you’ve got to come to each session with a lot of flexibility. Whether it trying to schedule the session itself, or the inevitable curve ball your players throw your way, you’ve got to be ready to change course – especially midstream – and continue on.
I’ve already talked about how breaking your sessions up into individual scenes that can be more freely moved around in your timeline can allow …
